HISTORY OF DOUGLAS CHURCH
Douglas Church began as a congregation in the Methodist Episcopal Church of the South. Services were held in a brush arbor near the current location of Douglas Cemetery. The first structure was built near the brush arbor location circa 1855. (see picture left).
In 1885, a two-acre plot, at the present location, was purchased for $2. The church structure was moved down Highway 821 on log rollers, with the congregation walking behind singing hymns. A second church structure was completed here. |
Ground was broken in 1976 for a third sanctuary (pictured above), with the consecration service held on September 25, 1977. This building is now the fellowship hall. A Sunday School building and gymnasium were added in 1990.

An expansion project (pictured above) began in July 2007 and included plans for the current sanctuary, choir room, nursery/classrooms, and pastoral offices. The consecration service for this facility was held on September 14, 2008.

Construction on the most recent improvements to the church campus began in 2017, including a new Children's Education Building and multi-use Family Life Center. The spaces were opened in October 2018.
In November 2019, Douglas Church officially disaffiliated from the United Methodist denomination and became an independent congregation. To read Douglas Church's comprehensive "Statement of Faith", please click here. |
